I wrote most of this song while walking home from work one day in 2017. Sometimes I would walk from the Flatiron district to 3rd avenue and by the time I reached the train, I’d had the basic melody and lyrics in my head. I finally fleshed out the rest of the song and recorded a demo about 4 years later and then sat on it, feeling good about it but feeling like there was just something missing. Enter: Jeff Berner. If you aren’t familiar with Jeff or haven't worked with him, you should. If it weren’t for him, this song might still be sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Jeff took the song and kicked it up several gigantic notches. He not only got it to finally sound the way I wanted it to sound - he added the achingly beautiful guitars in the last section of the song. In addition, the bridge was the one section I could not seem to feel satisfied with, but Jeff is a wizard and turned it into one of my favorite parts of the song! Even though “Wild Wins” was written so many years after my first single “Ennui”, it is essentially its opposite in theme, so it feels right to release it as my next single.

I originally wrote “Ennui” in 2011 while I was in a group called Sleepwalk. Sadly, that project ended before it could see the light of day. It was just a skeleton at the time; the lyrics and structure having the naiveté and simplicity of a first-time songwriter. It has been extremely gratifying to come back to it a decade later and finally finish it.

Basalt Jar is the solo project of Julie Rozansky, aka “Brooklyn’s hardest working bassist”. After two decades of hustling as a bass player in Washington, D.C. and Brooklyn, Julie felt the inner nudge to create more than just bass lines. In this new role of singer-songwriter, Julie crafts heart-felt songs that speak of love, loss, and the messiness of being human. Moody, raw, and honest, the songs reveal a more vulnerable side of Julie not readily seen while playing bass in loud rock bands. “Ennui” is the first single from the upcoming Aquarius Demos.
